Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
