This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
