Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
