A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
