Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
