Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
