Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
